Review by Devi Yurika

Safety Zone, the 1975 album by Bobby Womack, is a soulful and introspective journey through the complexities of love and life. With his signature raspy voice and emotive delivery, Womack delivers a collection of songs that showcase his versatility as a songwriter and performer.

The album opens with the title track, "Safety Zone," a funky and upbeat tune that sets the tone for what's to come. From there, Womack takes the listener on a journey through the ups and downs of relationships, from the tender ballad "Love Ain't Something You Can Get for Free" to the heart-wrenching "I Could Never Be Satisfied."

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Daylight," a soulful and funky tune that showcases Womack's guitar skills as well as his distinctive voice. The song is a perfect example of Womack's ability to blend different genres and styles into his music, creating a sound that is both timeless and unique.

Summary by Devi Yurika

Safety Zone is a must-listen for fans of soul and R&B music. Bobby Womack's raw and emotional performances, combined with his impeccable songwriting, make this album a true classic that stands the test of time.

Comments

This second release within a twelve-month period witnessed a return to form, largely the result of the presence of the producer of Herbie Hancock and the Pointer Sisters, David Robinson. Though lambasted by many for being Womack's most commercial album, and his temporary succumbing to disco influences, this was his most consistent and polished collection of tracks since 1972's 'Understanding'. An early highlight is his masterful cover of the 1967 Temptations' hit 'I Wish It Would Rain' while Womack also shines on the atypical horn-backed 'Where There's a Will, There's a Way'. Another under-appreciated gem is 'Love Ain't Something You Get For Free', co-written with Ray Parker Jr. For this reviewer, the album hits another tier of quality towards the end of its second half with one of Womack's best ever tracks, the soulful Daylight', and the rousing album closer, 'I Feel a Groove coming On'.
This song just jumped into my head from out of nowhere. I used to love it when it was current many years ago. I'm amazed that I remembered the name right and the artist. Wow. The mind is an amazing thing.
Why am I just discovering this gem!!!?
The Cut! From Blewfoot..
My deejay days yall!! Real AFFIRMATIVE ?
Smokin
Well, did somebody said something, at the beginning of this song?
That somebody said something at the beginning of this song, and that is from electronic voices, and that is from these horns?
What more can you say Mr Womack!
I was 5 when this song came out, good tune.
RIP brother Bobby Womack. We will always love & cherish the soulful music that he left behind, for all the archives. This tune had special meaning to me, when it was released because as Bobby sings: "Genie, only comes to me, when she needs me, but oh.....that's okay!"  And, by coincidence, I was dating a young lady who was named: Regina (Genie).
Jim Ford's version is a way better.
This song sure brings back alot of good memories. No one does it like Bobby
Without a doubt the horns were kickin !
As Darth Vader once said the groove is strong in this one
