Xul's latest album, "What Lies Hidden," is a fierce and uncompromising work that delivers on the band's promise of extreme metal mastery. From the opening notes of "Frozen, We Drown," the listener is plunged into a world of dark and brutal intensity, with crushing riffs, thunderous drumming, and guttural vocals that sear through the mix like a hot knife through butter.
Throughout the album, Xul demonstrates a remarkable ability to blend different subgenres of metal into a cohesive and compelling whole. The band's blackened death metal influences are evident in tracks like "Mastication of Putrescent Empyrean Remains," while songs like "Orbit of Nemesis" and "Echoes of Despair" showcase their mastery of melodic death metal.
Despite the sheer ferocity of the music, Xul never loses sight of the importance of melody and dynamics. The album's title track is a prime example of this, with its hauntingly beautiful intro leading into a blistering assault of blast beats and tremolo-picked guitars.
