Review by Mike Pluta

Tom T Hall's "Ballad Of Forty Dollars" is a timeless classic that showcases the singer-songwriter's signature storytelling style. The album features ten tracks, each one telling a different story through Hall's unique perspective.

From the opening track "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died" to the closing ballad "Homecoming," Hall's lyrics are poignant and heartfelt, often exploring themes of love, loss, and redemption. The title track, "Ballad Of Forty Dollars," is a standout, with its haunting melody and lyrics that speak to the struggles of everyday people.

Hall's vocals are understated yet powerful, perfectly complementing the stripped-down instrumentation that characterizes the album. The production is simple and unobtrusive, allowing the songs to speak for themselves.

My entire young life in one song, I dug lots of graves
Sorry to see you go Tom.

Tom T Hall was the first person I saw in concert. Great memories...he will be missed. ?
She’s a Good Hearted Woman.
Tom also wrote Harper Valley PTA which became a country hit in 1968 sung by Jeannie C. Riley. It owes a lot to this song is what I thought, listening to this.
Tom T. Hall is one of the greatest American Song Writers. Up there with Dylan.
my late oldest brother worked at a cemetery and used to laugh at this song
Never be another like him. RIP TOM.
RIP..Too bad life got too hard at the end..
My Father liked Big Band/Swing music the most. But did like some C&W, including T. T. Hall. The first time I heard this song; My Dad and my 4 Brother-in-Laws (Three of whom had recently come home from Viet Nam & South East Asia) were working on a car, at night time if I remember correctly, changing an engine. My dad said about the part where the fellow owed him (T. T. Hall) $40 would be his (my Dad's) luck .... He'll never see those $40 again! But in all reality he' would (proverbially) give the shirt on his back to anyone who needed it! A lesson we his children follow to this day. Being the 'Father' of 8 kids that was a decent amount of money back then! Also, 1 of my B-i-L's dug graves ... by hand ... for a while after his time in the 'service''. My Dad, and 3 of my Brother in Laws have passed away...At times, I miss them, but to keep myself from feeling 'down', I'll pull-out my cassettes or albums and listen to This' song .. the 'GOOD" feelings come flowing back!! THANK YOU; MR. HALL (R.I.P) .. and your musicians!! Peace everybody!!
200th comment. ?
I love how Tom sings, "Some women do look good in black" and the guitar goes nuts!
RIP Tom ❤
You can't tell too much behind a veil. How true !
Tom T Hall age 85, of Franklin, TN, passed away on August 20, 2021. He was my friend, I only met him briefly once at the Terrace Ball Room in Salt Lake City. I know he was my friend because he wrote so many songs about me. See I was the guy that did not Marry Pretty Pamela Brown educated well intention good girl in our town. I have had the Mean Old Subdivision Blues, and at my Homecoming from Vietnam I had been gone so long I didn't realize Dad had a phone. I love Ole dogs Children and Watermelon Wine, and I do Like Beer. I met Cal Larsen an old Cowboy Philosopher of course Faster Horses and Older Whiskey and More Money. How old do you think I am I turned 73 about 11 months ago. It has been about 58 years since I slopped a pig but I get up every morning wondering Who's Gonna Feed them Hogs. I have every song Tom wrote because I think he had me in mind. But trouble is the feller owed me 40 bucks. Oh and that one about a week in a country jail not me. I have been married to miss deb for 43 years and every morning I tell her "Your man Loves you Honey".
Some women do look good in black.
