The orchestra's performance is impeccable, with each piece played with precision, energy, and a deep appreciation for Rossini's music. The powerful brass and strings sections are particularly noteworthy, adding a sense of grandeur and drama to the already impressive compositions.
Reiner's direction is also top-notch, bringing out the subtleties and nuances of each overture while also capturing the sweeping, epic nature of the music. His interpretation of the William Tell Overture, for example, is particularly memorable, with the famous "Lone Ranger" theme played with passion and intensity.

Died: 1868-11-13 (Passy, Paris, France)
Gioachino Antonio Rossini was an Italian composer who gained fame for his 39 operas, although he also wrote many songs, some chamber music and piano pieces, and some sacred music.
He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity.

The effect Reiner and Herseth pull of when going from the quiet section to the beginning of the famous galop is breathtaking and absolutely perfect. Great timpani here, also.
The link between this music and one of MY HEROS is soooooo close. When you add REINER to the mix it will take me to HEAVEN. I almost got a silver bullet from him when he was doing advertising for Amoco SILVER Gasoline.

This is by far(!) my favorite recording of the William Tell Overture.
No way around it: this is THE BEST recording of the William Tell Overture I've heard in 40+ years of concert-going and record collecting. I'm to young to have heard Reiner in person, but his recordings - one reason to be glad to be alive!!
I grew up in Chicago and as a young man was lucky enough to see many, many concerts with Reiner and the CSO. Memories that will never leave me along with seeing Callas thirteen times.

Ahh that bass drum, I remember it will. Totally OTT, but who cares :) - Always loved the LP. Great performances. The stereo recording was made in 1954 IIRC!!! - I wish they were all on youtube
