Review by Matthew Hurst

Lab Report's latest album, Unhealthy, is a haunting and experimental exploration of sound. The duo of Eric Pounder and Matthew Schultz have created a unique blend of electronic, ambient, and industrial music that is both challenging and rewarding.

From the opening track, "Broken Glass," it's clear that Lab Report is not interested in following any conventional musical rules. The song is a collage of found sounds, distorted vocals, and eerie synthesizers that create a sense of unease in the listener. This feeling of disorientation continues throughout the album, with tracks like "Pulse" and "Rope Burn" featuring abrasive beats and distorted vocals.

Despite its challenging nature, Unhealthy is also a deeply immersive listening experience. The album's soundscapes are rich and detailed, with each track creating its own unique atmosphere. "Sick Day" is a highlight, with its pulsing bass and ethereal melodies creating a sense of tension and release.

About Lab Report

The electro-industrial terrorists Lab Report came together in the late '80s as a trio of Matthew Schultz, Eric Pounder and Derek Frederickson. The group signed to Invisible Records and released their 1991 debut album, Figure X-71. After follow-ups in 1994 and 1995, Lab Report went on hiatus again until 1997, when Pounder left the group. Now just a duo, Schultz and Frederickson released Excision that year. After "Excision" came out, Lab Report continued releasing albums on a steady basis, but their new releases can be bought only through their website. n

Summary by Matthew Hurst

Lab Report's Unhealthy is a bold and uncompromising album that rewards those who are willing to dive deep into its twisted world of sound. It's not an easy listen, but it's a rewarding one for those who are up for the challenge.

Comments

One of the best albums I have ever heard. When this came out, it was exactly what I needed to hear. Excellent.
Actually that should be Pounder and Schultz as LAB REPORT featuring Gen and Lydia.
