Innercity Griots, the second album by Freestyle Fellowship, is a masterpiece of underground hip-hop. Released in 1993, the album showcases the lyrical and musical talents of the Los Angeles-based group, who were known for their innovative approach to rap music.
The album features a mix of jazz-infused beats, funky basslines, and intricate rhymes that explore a range of social and political issues. From the opening track "Here I Am," which introduces the group's unique style of vocal harmonies and complex wordplay, to the closing track "7th Seal," which touches on themes of spirituality and redemption, Innercity Griots is a journey through the minds and experiences of the inner-city griots.
The standout tracks on the album include "Hot Potato," a fast-paced track that showcases the group's ability to switch up their flow and rhyme schemes, and "Way Cool," a jazzy track that features a guest appearance by the legendary jazz pianist Horace Tapscott.
